The Old Dominion Bible! (well maybe not bible but you catch my drift)

If you are going to attend OldDominion University then there are a few places and things you should know if you want to stay healthy, active and have fun. To start things of you will need to know about some healthy eateries so that you can advoid the freshman fifthteen. Our first stop on our journey is at Tropical Smoothie located in the village directly behind The Ted Constant Center. They have a vast variety of smoothies and meals that make for excellent healthy meal. In addition this is a great place to eat at after a workout or cardio session. The next eatery you need to make a trip to is Panera Bread. This can be found off the intersection of 21st street and monticello ave and this is the part of the venture where you will need some type of transportation. The trip is well worth it, once you get a taste of their freshly made sandwiches or inavative soup selections you wont worry about the five minute car ride or the fact that it is very healthy for you. Now that i've showed you wear to eat a heathly meal im going to show you were to whip that body into shape. Our Next stop on this adventure is the Old Dominon Rec Center which is located on 48th and powhatan ave. This is ODU's new state of the art Recreation facility and our first stop inside is the first floor where all the major equipment is located. This is where the real workout is and if you put in time on this level you will definitely get the results you want. Across from the first floor workout area is where the Fitness Studio located. These studios are where numerous of classroom exercises and fun workouts are held. All you need to do is check the list, see what interests you and the show up to the class at the appropriate time. One of the most popular classes is zumba, a dance workout class that is offered. So you may want to check that class out when you have a chance. Our last stop is the upstairs of the the Rec Center. This is the Cardio Workout Area and is host to numerous treadmills, two variations of bike machines, a track for running, and numourous other elipitical machines. If you are ever in the need to burn those unwanted calories then this is defintently the floor you need to be on. Not to mention the four 40 inch flat screen t.v's on the wall for you viewing pleasure. Now that you know these places around campus I hope your freshman year goes great and advoid unhealthy habits. Just follow this healthy bible and you will be on the right track. Good Luck!

Reflection Time

I believe my blogs have came a long way from day 1 blog about health in general.I went from just talking about losing weight and overeating to how the students here at odu are not utilizing the facilities built to help us stay in shape and healthy. I put in a lot of time with making sure that everyone is aware of what we have here on campus and where it can be found at. I even live my blogs. On any day you can come to the gym and see me doing something i wrote about in my blogs. The only thing that i wish i could have done better was to get more people to actually read my blogs. Reason being is that there is alot of people at odu that would benefit greatly from them. Plus it took me to the end of the semester to learn about other networking places ,such as twitter, that i could have gotten my blogs out there. So if i could go back in time and do something differnt i would have networked better basically. But i dont think i would have done anything else differently because i thought i reached all my goals this semester and some. Reason being that i got through this class without rambling on in blogs and that i actually made choices in my life from actually being interested in this topic i was gaven. So all in all i think this was the way i wanted my blogs and experience to be.

Okay, Who Done It?!?!

Recently the new rec center has put into effect a new policy on towels. You have to check them out now! Why you ask? Because someone or more than likely people stole 400 towles from the gym. So instead having a towel to lay down on the benches to reduce sweat or to keep others sweat from getting on you, we have nothing. No one is in the mood to check out a towel then check a sweaty towel back in at the end of your workout. This is really a bad look on the rec centers part because people could get hurt or possible sick. Hopefully they will fix this problem by next semester.

An Added Boost! (No Jose Canseco)

Are you looking for a little extra boost while you are in the gym? Well i have the answer for you all! Its called Glutamine and is the most abundant amino acid (building block of protein) in muscle cells. It is released from the muscle during times of stress (such as hard weight training workouts) and dieting. So this is no steriod or illegal bulk building pill, instead its perfectly legal and safe. The effects of this pill can be that little mphfff you need and they are listed here.

1. Regulation of protein synthesis (this is one of the ways in which steroids exert their muscle building effects).

2. Accelerating glycogen synthesis after a workout.

3. Sparing the use of the glycogen stored in the muscle cell (recall that the glycogen stored in the muscle cell is what gives the cell the healthy volume and firmness that you seek).

4. Faster recuperation from weight training workouts.

For more information click here and these pills can be purchased at your local GNC

Zumba!

There is this new class called Zumba at the new rec center at odu. It is a great new way to shed pounds throught dancing. It is mostly a female oriented class that uses salsa, club, and reggeatone dance moves. I had the pleasure to attend a class and it was was a very upbeat class. The class has non-stop dancing with a few breaks and will have u sweating out the fat in no time. My Jessica Gordon is the instructor at our school and she is a very good instructor. After one of her classes all i heard was girls talking about how they couldnt wait till the next class. So if you ever want to ditch the workout and join the party below are a list of the times she will be odu and holding a Zumba class.

1 Zumba Thursday 06:00 PM ODU Student Recreation Center

2 Zumba Friday 05:15 PM ODU Student Recreation Center

3 Zumba Sunday 03:00 PM ODU Student Recreation Center

No More Tickets!!!!

Old Dominion University has built a new recreational facility for its student body and falcuty. It is state of the art in design as well as the different activities it encompasses. Everything is as what was promised and expected from the new facility but there is one major problem. Where do you park your car at? Theres a lot next to it but if you park there than you will get a $22 dollar ticket. There is plenty of open spots for parking on the street leading to the gym but once again you will get either a warning or a $22 dollar ticket. You could park across the street in front of whitehurst but that only 2 hour parking so you better hope your in and out. Then there is powatan parking lot but i have seen odu parking officials hand out tickets for parking there. So where is it okay to park at? Is it understood that everyone has to walk no matter how far away you live or not? Or is this new gym just a demo because it seems like its no safe way to get there. Lois Simmons an official at the office of parking and public transportation said, "The school is working on building a garage for the facility and for now we just have to bear with them and they will try and cut us some slack." To me something else needs to be done immediately because its already a recesion and we students do not need more bills than we already have.

For further parking peoblems you may want to check out this

New Gym, Same Familiar Tune

So ODU opened its new gym two weeks ago and boy was there a big buzz. The first day it opened it was packed! I mean all three basketball courts full, rock climbing wall crowded, racketball courts booked solid and the weight lifting area full of new faces. Now after about two or three weeks have pasted it seems like the buzz went with it. I go everyday to workout and lift and only see the same faces as i did from the webb center facility and the 47th street wharehouse gym. Sure are sum new faces but most are there for the new addidtions made to the facility such as racketball and cycling class. So it seems like nothing much has changed around Old Dominion. Its just another new gym but the same ole tune.

Visual Salience

I chose this picture of my niece because its so much going on in the picture. First her jacket catches your eye to begin with because of all the stripes and bright colors. Then you notice she either screaming, yelling, or maybe thats how she smiles. Also there is a glare in her glasses that gives the picture a shine. Your not really sure wat is going on in the picture but you cant stop looking. my personal opinion is because shes so cute.

Playoffs!!

My event i went to was the Basketball Intramural Playoff game for the B league. I actually was playing and our team name is PB&J Time. We were the third seed and played the sixth seed in a do or die situation. Meaning if we lost we would be knocked out of the playoffs and if we won we would advance. We had played this team before and i believe we beat them the last time we met. So we began this game with a little chip on our shoulder. The game in the beginning was close, mainly because we were allowing them to score when they really sucked. But none the less the stuck in the game with us until the last five minutes of the quarter. That's when we turned up the heat and started to blow them out. By halftime we were up by 15 points and really jelling as a team. Long story short the game ended by a blowout and we all padded our stats. Everyone ended the game with a great game and it was fun. It was a great way to start the playoffs.

Fitness Here At ODU

I asked a few people around school on how they felt about fitness here at odu and these are their thought s on the subject.

The first person i surveyed was my roommate Rajui Audain.
Me: Do you use the rec center facilities?
Raj: I do when i have time. I usually go to the 47th street gym and play basketball and i play on an intramural team as well.
Me: So how would you rate the programs that are around campus to help people stay in shape?
Raj: I thinks its okay but could be better. There's still a lot of people who don't know about any of the programs offered.
Me: Do you think there is any improvements that should be made?
Raj: Yes! The 47th street gym needs a massive remodeling.

The next person i asked was my other roommate Inoa Charlton.
Me: How often do you go to any of the gyms?
Noa: I never go to any. I go to the YMCA everyday instead because their facility is way better than anything at o.d.u.
Me: How is that so? elaborate?
Noa: Well they have a lot more machines so you don't have to wait or sign up. They have a pool inside the same facility so you don/t have to go to a whole different gym. They have multiple workout rooms and they have showers for you in the locker rooms.
Me: So is it safe to say you wont be using any of o.d.u's facilities at all?
Noa: Not at all. unless they get up to the standards of the Y.

The last person i interviewed was Laz Hamlett

Me: How do you feel about odu's fitness programs?
Laz: I have never been to any but i go to the gym to workout from time to time.
Me: Which facilities do you got to and how are they in your opinion?
Laz: II go to the AA Building sometimes to hoop and the 47th street gym to lift mostly but i hoop there sometimes as well. But the gym in the webb is the best to workout in.
Me: Do you think enough people workout?
Laz: Not at all. I see the same people all the time when i go to the gyms.

Who's really making a change?

Everyday As i go to the gym i see the same people in the gym. Whether they are the ones playing basketball, going to the fitness classes, on the machines or lifting weights. Its to a point that i can almost say i know everybody that comes to gym now and thats a shame. Where are all those new year resolution people at who claimed they were gonna stick to their diet and lose weight? Wheres all those people who swear up and down that they were so good or great at basketball? If you dont know where then i really dont know because they are not around when im in the gym. It only takes a few hours out of your day to go to the gym and yet people cant even spare that time. I guess its just another year another broken resolution.

Intramural Basketball

What are you doing with your time after class? Studying, eating, sleeping, or chilling is the basic answers you hear but for many its practicing or playing in the odu intramural basketball league. I have been going to these games lately and often see the people playing on these teams are the same people you see in the gym on 47th street. The games are not like the ones on 47th steet tho, they are refereed and stats are taken. Most of the time they are structered, meaning teams run plays or play zone defense. There is more of a team spirit rather than one guy trying to score all the points, where as you see quite often in the other gym. With that said i think this is a very great way to stay in shape during this semester and a good way to practice on your game more. I think more people should be aware of this league and should participate.

Getting Brolic!

Erin Hicks on Mens Health wrote a day ago

"Stretch out before. Woody says stretching is key for him to warm up and prevent injury during the game. “The more you stretch, the less likely you are to get injured. Ease back into the weight room, but no heavy max lifting. Focus on light-rep, light-weighted workouts and core workouts."
I totally agree with this statement because what she is saying is true. Nothing shapes and scuplts your body like weight lifting. Even if your only lifting five pounds, over time you will get stronger and tone up the sections that you work out. All you have to do is stick with it and know your limits and you will shed those unwanted pounds in no time.

Where You At????

When we were handed our scavenger hunt hints i was confused like crazy. She gave me clues like behind glass, i help internal problems, and you don't always get a refund from me. I was starring at the paper like is she serious? Where could i find such a place like this and will i even be right. So i sat down that night and thought over the clues in my head and it started to make a little more sense. She said it was in the business building and that's Constant Hall. So i knew i was on the right track. The next day i went to constant, because i had class, and started to look around for some of the clues she outlined for me. I walked all around that place and didn't find anything so i just gave up and went to class instead. The whole time in stat class all i could think of is where in the world is she leading me to. Finally as i walk out of class i see all this glass. Eureka, it was the undergrad advising room. So i pulled out my camera out and took pictures for my flickr account. Come to find out that i did not actually find the right place and it was actually the vending machines she was describing. I guess not every scavenger hunt ends in success. Better luck next time for me

Get Healthed Up'd!

As a junior at Old Dominion everyday as I walk to class I see more and more students eating unheathly without any concern of a very healthy alternative. ChickFila, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and McDonalds business is booming thanks to all of us who continuously eat there. Sure there are fruits and some healthier foods available in the cafe but really who's gonna pick up and apple over a slice a pizza? Its getting so bad that your told you will gain atleast 15lbs your freshman year of college! We need a change and a better grasp on what eating healthy is really about.

I dont mean go eat sum tofu now

How often do you eat fast food in a week?
